What is Simply...Challenging?

In brief, Simply...Challenging is my challenge blog. Here, I'm only listing the reading (and 1 writing) challenges I am/have taken part in, as well as book lists for each. My reviews are posted at Goodreads. Yes, it seems weird, but right now, it works for me. ;)

Witches and Witchcraft Reading Challenge

1 January 2012 - 31 December 2012

Melissa from Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf is hosting the Witches and Witchcraft Reading Challenge.

The challenge is to read books that contain a witch as a main character or with major witchcraft elements.  Both fiction and non-fiction is acceptable (Melissa includes a suggested book list broken down into both categories at the sign-up post), as are various formats and re-reads.

There are 4 levels to choose from:
Initiate - read 1-5 "witchy" books
Maiden - read 6-10 "witchy" books
Mother - read 11-15 "witchy" books
Crone - read 16-20 "witchy" books

There is a prize!  ;)  Participants who officially sign up will be given one entry, as well as an additional entry for each review they write and link-up.  Also, anyone who meets or exceeds their challenge level will also be given an additional entry.  And the giveaway?  A "witchy" book of choice up to $10 from the Book Depository.

You're kidding, right?  How can you wave a challenge like this around and I not participate! ;)  I'll be trying for Crone (16-20) and hopefully beyond - I need to make a dent in my "witchy" tbr mountain!

1.  The Trouble with Magic by Madeline Alt
* I was suppose to read this for a cozy mystery challenge last year, but never got around to it - here's to second chances!
2.  Second Hand Spirits by Juliet Blackwell
3.  Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
4.  Natural Witchery by Ellen Dugan
* I read Dugan's Garden Witchery ages ago and I really liked what she said and how she said it.  So, of course I bought Natural Witchery, but never got around to reading it...
5.  The Spiral Dance by Starhawk
* It's a classic I've been wanting to read forever
6.  Wicca by Scott Cunningham
* Re-read - very influential for me and it's about time I re-read it
7.  Magical Herbalism by Scott Cunningham
* I started it in 2011 but never finished it...
8.  The Triumph of the Moon by Ronald Hutton
* I've had this book home from the library more times that I can count, but something else always seems to come along...

  1. So glad that you are joining!! I think we'll be reading some of the same books!! I've heard that Ellen Dugan is really good...this is the year for me to check her out!!

  2. Thanks for hosting this challenge (though I did find 2 more "witchy" challenges just after joining yours!). I look forward to see what you've chosen! ;)

  3. Hi Jenn! I'd love to send you a copy of my new YA book, AUDREY'S GUIDE TO WITCHCRAFT. Though it looks like you've got an incredible list here. If you're interested, though, email me: jodygehrman at gmail dot com.
