I've lately (surprisingly enough) found myself completely engrossed in the new series of Doctor Who, beginning with the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and continuing to the 10th (David Tennant).  I have yet to see the 11th (and have resisted peeking ahead!), as I'm (slowly) watching the episodes on DVD. 

Naturally, my interest has expanded to include the new series of books that have been released in conjuction with the television show.  Initially, I was thinking of presenting it as a perpetual challenge, but I find I work better with a goal in sight, and thus, The Doctor Reading Challenge 2012 was born.

If you'd like to join me, you're more than welcome to read any of the published Doctor Who books, graphic novels, non-fiction, or other material.  And like most challenges, there are a few (ahem) levels to choose from:

Second Doctor - read 5 Doctor Who books
Third Doctor - read 10 Doctor Who books
Fourth Doctor - read 15 Doctor Who books
Fifth Doctor - read 20 Doctor Who books

Death by Gaslight Reading Challenge - Sign Up

The majority of the mysteries I read are either cozies or historicals (and mostly both).  Since I'm already planning to participate in Yvonne's (from Socrates' Book Reviews) Cruisin' Thru the Cozies Reading Challenge, I thought I would design a personal challenge for my "historical" bent. 

For the Death by Gaslight Reading Challenge, the goal is to read mysteries set in or written during the Victorian and Edwardian eras (1837 - 1910). I'll probably be reading mysteries set in England (since those are the ones I'm most interested in), but any location is acceptable, as long as the time frame fits. No more than 3 titles can be from the same series (except for the first special challenge, listed below).

There are 4 levels to choose from:
1.  The Merry Widow of Windy Nook: 5 books
2.  Palmer the Poisoner: 10 books
3.  Burke and Hare, Body Snatchers: 15 books
4.  Jack the Ripper: 20+ books

Additionally, there are 4 "special challenges".  Books which are read for any of these mini-levels do not count towards the main reading levels. These are "extra credit" and are purely optional.
1.  Serial Killer: Read an entire series (re-reading if necessary) from the first book until the last (or most recently published). There is no limit on the number of books, so a series could consist of 2 books or 20.
2.  The Great Detective: Read 5 (or more) books featuring Sherlock Holmes, at least one of which must be an original story by Arthur Conan Doyle.
3.  Arsenic and Air Ships: Read 5 (or more) books which are steampunk mysteries.
4.  Penny Dreadfuls: Read 5 (or more) non-fiction books that detail Victorian or Edwardian crimes.

All the regular rules apply:
* cross-overs between challenges are more than okay
* any format counts - audio, ebook, etc., as well as any level (adult, children, YA)
* you don't have to have a blog to participate (since I technically don't - I post reviews at Goodreads)
* feel free to change levels at any time
* re-reads are fine, but books must be read in the 2012 calendar year to count
Reading challenges are suppose to the challenging (hence the name)...but we don't do this for a living, we do this for fun!

HP7 Reading Challenge

As a longtime fan of the Harry Potter series, I was disappointed to see the end with the 2007 release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - and, in fact, have steadfastly refused to read it (I was in denial, what can I say? ;)

That being said...

With the impending release Part 2 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie, I have decided to buck up and finally say goodbye to my favourite characters (Charlie Weasley, ironically, being one of my favourites ;)

Thus, I am challenging myself with a three-month HP binge, ending on the release day of Part 2 - of which I'm scheduled to attend the midnight showing with a friend.

In the meantime, I'll be reading (and watching) HP, up to and including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (the book) and HPDH, part 1 (the movie).

Edit, 10 August 2011: <hanging head in shame> So... I didn't finish in time...but then, I didn't go to the midnight release either! ;)  My new(ly modified) goal to finish this challenge will now be the DVD release date (which has yet to be announced), since I'll probably see the movie then!

Edit, 4 December 2011: Ahem...still no finish.  So I'm extending this challenge unil mid-April 2012 (a year from the start date)...maybe then I'll finally finish it! ;)

"Nancy and the Boys" Reading Challenge

I loved reading Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys when I was growing up!

I own copies of the old yellow and blue covered versions (from the 1960s, I think) of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys inherited from an older cousin, and I used to collect (but they went the way of a yard sale - le sigh) the "Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Super Mystery" series as well as the "Nancy Drew Files" series, both of which would have been released in the 1990s.  They were my introduction to the mystery genre!

In that light, I'm challenging myself to rediscover my love of ND & HB with the longterm "Nancy and the Boys" Reading Challenge.

My goal is to read all the ND & HB series titles, from the original releases right up until the new graphic novels and everything in between.  This will be a perpetual challenge - if you'd like to join me (whether reading all or just some) I'd love the company!  Wish me luck!

The Reichenbach Falls Challenge

 In honour of the new Sherlock Holmes movie due out in December (and since I've read bits and pieces, but not the entire works), I'm challenging myself with The Reichenbach Falls Challenge : to read all 60 of the published Sherlock Holmes stories (both novels and short stories) by Arthur Conan Doyle.  I'll be working from The Complete Sherlock Holmes, published in 1992 by Barnes and Noble Books - all 1,122 pages worth!  If I read any "bonus" stories (books by other authors featuring or referencing the Great Detective), they will also be counted, but not required of the challenge.

Note: w = indicates the story was also viewed, using the Granada 1980s television series (my favourite!).  In total, 41 adaptations were watched.

Though there is already a Sherlockian challenge (The Baker Street Challenge), it is limited in the number of books to be read (3, 4, 5 or 7).  If you want just a taste of Holmesian, check them out!
